Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef shoulder, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large shallot, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the beef: In a mixing bowl, combine beef cubes with soy sauce, honey, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, five-spice powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Toss to coat and marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Grill the beef: Preheat the grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill beef cubes for about 2-3 minutes per side until cooked through.
  3. Make the crispy shallots: In a skillet over medium heat with oil, cook sliced shallots until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Cook the egg: Fry an egg sunny-side up in another skillet until the whites are set but yolk remains runny.
  5. Assemble the bowls: Divide cooked rice among bowls and top with grilled beef, crispy shallots, and the fried egg. Drizzle with remaining marinade and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.
