Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (divided)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. In another bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water for about five minutes until foamy.
  2. Heat milk, sugar, and half of the butter in a saucepan until melted. Mix this into the flour with activated yeast, eggs, vanilla extract, and lemon zest until a dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for about 8 to 10 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for one hour or until doubled.
  4. For the almond topping: Melt remaining butter in a saucepan; stir in honey and heavy cream with sliced almonds until smooth and slightly toasted.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Punch down risen dough and spread evenly in a greased baking pan. Pour almond topping over the dough.
  6. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. Let cool for about ten minutes before whipping heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form.
  7. Slice the cooled cake horizontally into two layers and spread whipped cream filling over the bottom half before placing the top layer back on.
