  • ¾ cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 3 Tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 34 Tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon almond (or other preferred) extract (optional)
  • Gel food coloring
  • Silver star sprinkles

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Mix in vanilla extract, salt, and egg yolk; then gradually add all-purpose flour until a dough forms.
  3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Roll out the chilled dough to about ¼ inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut out star shapes using cookie cutters.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes or until the edges are golden. Cool on wire racks.
  7. Prepare royal icing by combining sifted powdered sugar, corn syrup, milk, and extracts until smooth. Decorate cooled cookies with colored icing and sprinkles as desired.
